Step 1: How to identify the leak

GAS MAINS PRESSURE STORAGE HEATERS

If it is the pressure/temperature relief valve on the side of the unit, this is a very common issue. It is normal for these valves to leak occasionally during each heating cycle.
Locate the valve on the side of the tank near the top, then lift and drop the silver lever three or four times to open, close and clear any blockages and valve seats. If the leak stops, your problem is likely solved. If it keeps going, you may need a replacement valve. This is a relatively inexpensive repair that will extend the life of your system, so it is well worth doing.

There is also a pressure relief valve usually on the low level inlet piping connections which may also need the same approach as above if it is continually passing water

ELECTRIC MAINS PRESSURE HEATERS

If the leak is at the top or the bottom of the Hot water system – STOP!
DO NOT TOUCH THE HOT WATER SYSTEM WITHOUT TURNING OFF THE ELECTRICITY TO IT AT YOUR POWER BOARD

GAS HOT WATER HEATERS

If your gas hot water system is leaking you will need to turn off the gas. Look for another pipe (gas) running into the system and turn it off at that tap or lever valve.

Step 2: Turning Off The Water

GENERAL

Once the gas or electricity has been turned off, next you need to turn off the water on the inlet pipe to the heater. This applies to electric, solar and gas hot water units.
Look for a small black tap or lever valve on a pipe leading into the bottom of the unit. Turn this off fully. If you can’t find the inlet tap, or it has seized up, you may need to turn off the water at the mains water meter. But before you do, it’s a good idea to prepare ahead and fill the kettle or a jug with water for drinking and have a couple of buckets of water handy so you can flush the toilet.

Step 3: Call A Licensed Plumber (If You Haven’t Already)
