Not every plumbing issue needs a plumber.
Here we show you what to include in your basic home plumbing tool kit. This should get you through the minor hiccups, like blocked drains and basins, and leaking or dripping taps and showers.
- Plunger – This rubber cupped wonder is your best buddy when you have a blocked toilet or a clogged sink.
- Adjustable curved jaw pliers – Also known as vise grips or multi-grip pliers, these allow anyone to get maximum grip plus an easy release when done. Use a thick, soft cloth between them and your tap ware to avoid scratches and marks.
- Washers or tap valves – If you know what type your taps take – either nylon or brass, flat or rounded end – having a few of these on hand can save you a trip to the hardware store later.
- O-rings – Again, keep some of these around for emergencies. Grab a multipack with a mix of different sized rubber and red fibre washers too.
- Tap spanner set – These tube spanners make it easy to get in where other spanners can’t. Slide the right size over the spindle, use a screwdriver or shifting spanner on the other end as a handle and you’re in business.
- Plumber’s tape – This seals the threads of screwed on fittings, like showers, and stops water leaks. White tape is great, blue is stronger. and lasts longer.(delete red here)
- Drain cleaner – Blocked drains can occur after hours, so by having this on hand, it can save you a long wait until the supermarket or hardware store opens again.
